Language, Literacy and Communication

Language and literacy skills are important so we have a well stocked book corner and there are plenty of opportunities for ready stories, listening to and reciting poems or singing rhymes.  Board games and puzzles stimulate language skills and adults are there to talk to the children, discuss their activities and encourage the children's developing language.  Writing and drawing materials are always available.  In their imaginative play, children can write lists and menus, take down phone messages and food orders.  They are encouraged to write their names on their drawings and paintings.  Sometimes they will want to write about what they have drawn or observed.  Labels on boxes, lists, notices and displays all help with word recognition and the work done in the "4+" sessions builds on this by offering phonic work and a simple reading scheme for those who are ready.
