Many fun activities are essentially made up of mathematical skills. Threading beads, making patterns on peg boards or with mosaics, building with bricks and construction toys, playing with sand, water and play dough can all be used in mathematical concepts. Whilst playing the children are forming a basis for mathematical understanding because they are making patterns, following sequences, measuring, estimating and counting. They will also develop their mathematical language (e.g. bigger, more than, next, before, etc.) as they interact with the adults and learn to solve problems. These activities are extended in the "4+" sessions.
