We inspect and regulate to achieve excellence in the care of children and young people, and in education and skills for learners of all ages.
The new Ofsted brings together the wide experience of four inspectorates to make a greater difference for every child, and for all young people and adult learners, in England. Their educational, economic and social well-being will promote our success as a country.

Through a contract with Oxfordshire County Council, Oxfordshire Pre-school Learning Alliance assist the Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership with developing and sustaining high quality childcare places in all voluntary managed Ofsted registered pre-schools in Oxfordshire by:
Providing support to existing provision.
Assisting with extending provision.
Encouraging sustainability.

In 2006 Jim Rose, former Ofsted Director of Inspection, completed his independent review (PDF 431 KB) of the teaching of early reading. The review report provided clear recommendations on what constitutes 'high quality phonics work'. These recommendations were also summarised in the Core Position Paper (PDF 2.3 MB) 'Phonics and early reading: an overview for headteachers, literacy leaders and teachers in schools, and managers and practitioners in Early Years settings'. All principles underpinning these recommendations have been incorporated into the revised Primary Framework for literacy.
